Approximately one year ago, my wife and I made a trip to the Hawaiian Humane Society to "just look around." In one of the kennels was a matted, mangy retriever mix that seemed to smile at us. We noticed that "Titan", as they called him, has a lot of trouble getting up and was not much better at walking. We knew right away what he needed and that there are probably a few people that would be willing to do it. Oliver had not one, but two bad hips, and we took on the challenge of fixing him.
After adoption and a few months of research, we were repeatedly pointed to the direction of Dr. Leadbeater's office. From the moment he walked in the door of the exam room, we knew that he was the perfect doctor for our new son. His gentle, caring demeanor was apparent to both of us, and more importantly to Oliver. Following the x-rays, Dr. Leadbeater informed us that it was much worse than we thought and Oliver's hip joint (the worse of the two) had lost all form and functionality. The decision was made to get a total hip replacement. Although skeptical, with the assurance of Dr. Leadbeater, we felt confident.
It is important to note that before the operation, Oliver was in much pain and was beginning to have trouble walking at all. Running and jumping were out of the question. During the operation, Dr. Leadbeater found out again that the hip was much worse than even the x-rays had indicated. With his knowledge and expertise, he was able to build a hip literally from scratch. The next few weeks Oliver seemed anxious to try out his new hardware. Slowly we were able to allow him some freedom to roam. This was not the same dog that we picked up at the Humane Society six months prior. It took all that we had to keep him calm. Four months later, Oliver has free reign and can run, jump, and normally outlasts our other dog. It is really amazing.
I can't thank Dr. Leadbeater enough for what he has done. Having the surgery was a great decision. Not only are we saying we would do it again, but soon Oliver will be gatting another hip done. Anyone having second thoughts can rest assure that Dr. Leadbeater is the best and will take the best care of your "family member". The only regrets are from the cats that Oliver chases on occasion!!!
Like any surgical procedure, results may vary and can never be 100% guaranteed.
Like Oliver, many pets in Hawaii suffer from severe hip dysplasia.
If your pet or a pet you know might have hip disease, or your veterinarian has suggested that a total hip replacement might benefit your pet, please call to schedule a free telephone consultation with Dr. Leadbeater!
